En 1988, deux astronautes, Alan Virdon et Peter Burke, sont happés par une distorsion temporelle et atterrissent en 3085 sur la Terre. Une époque où la modernité n'existe plus et la race des singes a pris le contrôle de la planète, reléguant l'espèce humaine à l'esclavage et à des tâches subalternes. Jugés dangereux, Virdon et Burke sont pris en chasse par Urko, un gorille particulièrement violent qui déteste les humains. Avec l'aide de Galen, un chimpanzé scientifique, ils deviennent des fugitifs, obligés de parcourir ce monde étrange pour tenter de le comprendre.

    Burke, Virdon and Galen come across two humans fighting and get involved, but lose the magnetic disc. To recover it, they must approach the nearby village, where the ape prefect pits humans in a series of gladiatorial games.
